VenaSeal Q & A

What is VenaSeal?

The VenaSeal closure system is a treatment for varicose veins that uses a medical adhesive to close off the vein.

VenaSeal is an alternative to other vein treatments such as sclerotherapy, radiofrequency ablation, and thermal ablation techniques that use a nonthermal approach to treating problem veins.

VenaSeal is a straightforward outpatient procedure that’s successfully treated more than 100,000 patients worldwide.

Why would I need VenaSeal?

VenaSeal is a treatment that could help you if you have troublesome varicose veins. These are veins where blood starts pooling because of a fault in the one-way system of valves in your blood vessels.

If blood can leak back the wrong way, it pools and causes your veins to swell. If there’s enough blood present, the swollen veins start to protrude from your skin. They can be sore, itchy, and make your legs feel achy. They can also look unattractive.

VenaSeal is a minimally invasive treatment that can harmlessly seal off varicose veins and eliminate the unpleasant symptoms problem veins cause.

What are the advantages of VenaSeal?

There are several advantages to having VenaSeal treatment for varicose veins.

You don’t need to have any local tumescent anesthetic, and patients who have VenaSeal treatments typically experience less pain and bruising than patients who have thermal ablation treatments.

You are also likely to recover more quickly than you would from thermal ablation, and you won’t need to wear compression stockings as you do after some varicose vein treatments.

How does VenaSeal work?

VenaSeal works by blocking the problem vein so that blood can no longer get through. When there’s no way for the blood to flow down the treated vein, your body directs the blood flow via a different, healthier vein.

The treated vein eventually shrivels away completely, without affecting the efficiency of your peripheral circulation.

What happens during the VenaSeal procedure?

Your provider at HeartCare Associates of Connecticut’s Vein Center starts by making sure you’re comfortable and happy with the procedure.

The first stage of your treatment involves placing the VenaSeal adhesive into your vein through a small catheter or tube. Your provider applies pressure to your leg once the adhesive is in place to help the vein seal properly, then removes the catheter.

After your VenaSeal treatment, your provider applies a bandage to keep the wound clean while it heals. The procedure could take just a few minutes, depending on how many veins need treating.
